About Me

Dear Parents and Students,

My name is Mariana Baez and I am 24 years old. I graduated with my Bachelors of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Sam Houston State University in December of 2018. I am super excited to be joining the second grade team at Scott Johnson Elementary.

As for my hobbies, I enjoy a variety of different activities. These activities include traveling, reading, drawing, painting, baking, and gaming. This allows me to obtain different skills. Gaming for example, gives me an opportunity to connect to the students who enjoy video game as a hobby.

I am looking forward to an MARVELous year.

Sincerely,

Ms. Baez

Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy of teaching and learning does not revolve with just one approach but a collaboration of many. A person learns through experience and when we are aware of the mistakes we then take a alternative course of action. This involves ideas from both the experimental approach and the behaviorist approach.  We also cannot forget about “play” since that is a great way for students to work on their SPICE skills. My philosophy of teaching and learning is shaped by my experience through observation both at school and at home. For example, my nephew  and my niece are curious children. Both of them will not sit still for more than ten minutes and prefer playing than writing numbers and letters. However, this does not mean that they do not know how to write them. They are just more kinesthetic and hands-on than they are auditory learners.Every child has their own experiences and background knowledge but it won't be the same as those around them. It is important to remember that every child is different, will have different learning styles, and need to feel welcomed.

What type of learning style does he/she use? What accommodations need to be done for the students in my classroom? What kind of things are my students interested in? All of these questions need to be answered so that I can make sure that I am giving my students the best I can. I will also communicate with my students' to make sure that they know what they need to work on rather than just telling them what grade they received. It is important for the students to know that they have some control over what they learn and how they are learning. In order for this to happen I want to give my students options and meet with them to see how they feel about their progress and what they need to work on. I feel that by doing so the student may be more engaged in their own learning. While it may require extra time to plan and prepare for lessons I believe that the reward will be greater.
