Behavior Intervention Strategies

Knowing how to deal with negative or disruptive behavior in the classroom is essential to managing a classroom. Students need to be reinforced about the behavioral expectations at school or disruptions in the classroom which will slowly increase and cause unneeded frustration and stress.

  1. Take note of the first signs of negative behavior and do not brush off the situation as if it is not important.

  2. Do not stress over the situation but remain calm.

  3. Never engage in an argument with a student, instead have a private discussion with them.

  4. If negative behavior persists after our discussion, then I will send the student down to the administration office.

  5. If however, the negative behavior persists after have a discussion with the administration office then there will be a meeting set up with the parents, counselor, student, and myself.

Positive Reinforcement and Consequences

I will have a Shout Outs box/bin that students can use to highlight their classmates. Students may receive shout outs by being kind, helpful, creative, etc. Before the school day ends I will share the shout out with the class and have the student put a pom pom in their bucket. Once the student has filled up their bucket they can then choose a reward from the following list:

  1. write with special pen or pencil

  2. receive a ticket

  3. show and tell

  4. pick a joke to read to class

  5. wear slippers to class

I will also hand out tickets to students that are demonstrating good behavior and following directions. Once a student has collected a certain number of tickets they can then trade them in for a prize.

Consequences depend on the act and the level of severity but may include any of the following after the student has received the teacher look and a verbal warning.

  1. phone call home

  2. meet with teacher

  3. loss of minutes during recess time

  4. temporary loss of privilege

  5. seat change
